Introduction

The earth cooled. Dinosaurs roamed the earth. Then, depending on whose version of the story you believe, Gumnicks either evolved from lower primates, were created out of mud and the breath of God, or the world blew up and we don't exist and were all little lies floating around in one big lie and the truth is pecious because it is rare but truth is a lie because it doesn't exist but that means that lies are precious so we are all precious little lies floating around in one big precious lie.

 (PS: You little liar!)
…or God created Johnny and Johnny created the earth and dinosaurs, dinosaurs started eating everything, so Johnny destroyed dinosaurs, rebuilt the planet, and God made the Gumnicks so that they would be perfect and so would their relatives.
I kind of like Johnny’s version of the story!

"First the earth cooled. And, then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died, and they turned into oil. And, then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And, Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it, he took her best summer dress out of the closet, and put it on, and went to town." - Bob quoting Airplane

Thanks, Bob, for making sure we are historically accurate. It's good to have a fact-checker on board.

We’ll probably never know for sure, but here’s some of what we do know.

The Old World

Here's an interesting website I am exploring..... Polish Roots

And here's where it all (Dad's side at least-- I haven't started researching Mom's side yet) started.

Polish History of the Last 200 Years

Grandma told me when I went to visit her one of the last times that our name in Poland before Poppop came over was Gumieniak, so I have been looking that up. I have found a LOT of that name around, and am trying to figure out how to connect it to the region and OUR family specifically, but I am not so skilled at it all.

Ed has his own ideas about where the name originated, but I got my info from Grandma specifically wanting an ACCURATE name for future reference, so I am pretty sure mine is right.

She also said the region the family was from in Poland was called Salicia (most likely she meant Silesia-- I think she just got the spelling wrong when she told me). So I have been looking for that name and region and stuff online and seeing what I can find.

Here's something interesting about a possible long lost relative, but I don't know what connection if any there could be. But what an incredible story! http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4155/is_20060803/ai_n16658804
