Authoring Quick Start Guide

Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting started as a Gumnickopedia author/editor.

1. If you haven’t already done so, request a login ID.

2. Log in to Gumnickopedia with the user name and password you’ve been given.

3. To create a page from scratch:
1. In the address bar of your web browser, edit the URL to point to the new page you want to create. For example, this page is Authoring_Quick_Start_Guide, but if I want to set up a new page called “Ed’s test page,” change the address bar from
http://gumnick.com/wiki/index.php/Authoring_Quick_Start_Guide
to
http://gumnick.com/wiki/index.php/Ed’s_test_page
(Some browsers may display the URL differently, but whichever way it reads in your browser, you can create a new page by replacing the name of the current page with the name of your new page in the URL.)

2. As so soon as you hit the return key, you’ll get a message saying
There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page.
3. Click on the link to edit the page, and start putting in your text. From time to time, click the Image:show_preview_button.gif button to see how your page is shaping up.

4. When you have your text in place, hit the Image:save_button.gif button.

5. Create links to your new page by putting this code into the other pages from which you want to link:
New Page Title
4. To create a page by linking from an existing page:
1. Go to the page where you want to make a link to the new page you want to create.

2. Click on the “edit” tab above the page headline.

3. In the editing box, type the text that will include a link to your new page.
For example, on my user page, I might type
I’ve started a collection of My Pet Peeves.
4. Select the words that you want to make the clickable link. In the example, I would probably select “My Pet Peeves.”

5. Click the Image:button_link.png button above the editing box. This will insert brackets around the selected text and turn it into a link to a page called My_Pet_Peeves.

6. If you don’t want the page name to be exactly the same as the text from which you’re linking, you can add a different page name to the code. Separate the page name from the clickable text with the “pipe” symbol, which is shift-\ on standard keyboards. The code will look like this:
linked text
For my example, I might use something like this:
my pet peeves
The result will look like this:
I’ve started a collection of my pet peeves.
If you click on the link, you’ll see that it now takes you to an empty page called “Ed’s Pet Peeves 2.”

I’ll add some more instructions later. I hope this helps you get started!
