Authoring Quick Start Guide
From Gumnickopedia
Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting started as a Gumnickopedia author/editor.
- If you haven’t already done so, request a login ID.
- Log in to Gumnickopedia with the user name and password you’ve been given.
- To create a page from scratch:
- In the address bar of your web browser, edit the URL to point to the new page you want to create. For example, this page is
Authoring_Quick_Start_Guide, but if I want to set up a new page called “Ed’s test page,” change the address bar from
tohttp://gumnick.com/wiki/index.php/Authoring_Quick_Start_Guide
(Some browsers may display the URL differently, but whichever way it reads in your browser, you can create a new page by replacing the name of the current page with the name of your new page in the URL.)http://gumnick.com/wiki/index.php/Ed’s_test_page
- As so soon as you hit the return key, you’ll get a message saying
There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page. - Click on the link to edit the page, and start putting in your text. From time to time, click the
button to see how your page is shaping up.
- When you have your text in place, hit the
button.
- Create links to your new page by putting this code into the other pages from which you want to link:
New Page Title
- In the address bar of your web browser, edit the URL to point to the new page you want to create. For example, this page is
- To create a page by linking from an existing page:
- Go to the page where you want to make a link to the new page you want to create.
- Click on the “edit” tab above the page headline.
- In the editing box, type the text that will include a link to your new page.
For example, on my user page, I might typeI’ve started a collection of My Pet Peeves. - Select the words that you want to make the clickable link. In the example, I would probably select “My Pet Peeves.”
- Click the
button above the editing box. This will insert brackets around the selected text and turn it into a link to a page called My_Pet_Peeves.
- If you don’t want the page name to be exactly the same as the text from which you’re linking, you can add a different page name to the code. Separate the page name from the clickable text with the “pipe” symbol, which is shift-\ on standard keyboards. The code will look like this:
For my example, I might use something like this: linked text
The result will look like this: my pet peevesI’ve started a collection of my pet peeves.
If you click on the link, you’ll see that it now takes you to an empty page called “Ed’s Pet Peeves 2.”
- Go to the page where you want to make a link to the new page you want to create.
I’ll add some more instructions later. I hope this helps you get started!
