At age seventeen she began a carreer as a teacher in Massechusetts. For six years, she taught school and then made her own school in 1836. After ten years she gave up teaching and worked as a politician, but later opened another school in New Jersey. When she got very old she studied healthand became the first war nurse. She formed the American Red Cross and began to also help in natural disasters.
