You may be wondering, why did Ed put the list of Significant Pages on the home page, when all of those pages are listed in the menu?

The answer is: I’ve been reading up on how to make the site attractive to search engines, and one of the suggestions was to make sure that all of the most important pages are linked in the body of the home page, and not just in the site navigation.
