Hook rugs

Yes, it's true. We were children of the seventies. And we embraced the art of hooking rugs WITH A VENGANCE!

At least we mostly missed the tie-dying craze. —Ed

Musical theater

It was bound to happen. Mom and Dad saw The Music Man on Broadway on their honeymoon. We grew up with Man of La Mancha, Camelot, Oklahoma, and later on various more "modern" works like Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita. We Gumnicks love musical theater. (Come on John, admit it. You know you do too.)

Favorite memories include the flashlight shadow puppet performance of Evita performed by Ed (and various supporting actors) after Hurricane Alicia left us with no power and lots of boredom kicking in. It was times like these that also helped Beth to recognize that she is actually Ed’s twin, just a few years apart.

Naps

Anne may hold the record for Most Consecutive Days Napped. Didn’t she take a nap every day from eighth grade until about her senior year in high school?

If she started in eighth grade, next week she will hit 11,000 consecutive days. Should we alert Guinness? - Bob

Ed and Jane considered competing in the Napping Olympics in the Mixed Doubles event.

Shelties (and Dogs in general)

Most of us grew up thinking that shelties were the only kind of dog available out there. Some of us still think that.

Others have branched out to various mutts (and even --gasp!-- cats!), but shelties are still special. Maybe because they have big mouths just like Gumnicks.

Starfall

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet. Gumnicks love a shooting star, or as we like to call them, a “starfall.” (See Memories page)

Ed and Mark made it part of the name when they founded their graphic-design business, Starfall Graphics

Mondegreens

Okay, don't get me started... I misheard the ZZ Top song which I thought was titled "Velcro of Life" and the actual title is "Velcro Fly." Bob will never let me forget it.

Also, we enjoy the Dave Barry mondegreen from the Creedence song that goes, "There's a bad moon on the rise," he heard "There's a bathroom on the right." Ha! I love that one.

This will probably have to be a page of its own! I know there are many more out there.

I know that when I was little, I misunderstood about half of what the priests were saying at Mass. We’ll have to think of some of those, too.

From Jesus Christ Superstar: "Tables, chairs and oaken chests would have suited Jesus best."-- I think it was Jane who thought it was: "Tables, chairs and oaken chests would assume that Jesus blessed," which kind of makes sense if you really think about it.

Palindromes

A man a plan a canal Panama

A dog a plan a canal pagoda (I think Jane came up with this when she was living with us.)

Making Stuff Up...

Nonsense words, ways to insult each other without using actual bad words (Hing).... also terms of endearment (postranool), new lyrics to songs (especially Love Me Tender), new names for places and things that better represent them (Bob's "Needless Markups" for "Neiman Marcus").... (Feel free to add stuff here....)

Dogspeak/Catspeak. Another Gumnick favorite. Essentially, these are words that dogs know and love/hate that became part of the Gumnick vocabulary. Some are universal, some special to Gumnick dogs, some are real words, some are made up by insane Gumnick pet lovers.

Singing

Especially to dogs (especially MOM singing to dogs, but also occasionally the rest of us), but also other places-- in church choirs and folk groups, in school choirs, in gay choirs, along to musical theater records and Christmas records, to sing children to sleep, in the car, in the shower, doing karaoke....
